| A university degree for a young person in a developing country will transform her or his life utterly, opening a door out of poverty not only for her but also for her family. In Sri Lanka, university places are highly competitive, to to achieve one is of huge importance. For some high achievers however talented and hard working end in desperate disappointment when they find they simply cannot afford the living and support costs.. It only takes $C600/$US500 to support a student for her or his entire 4 year course. |
....Amanda and Chais, two Vancouver teenagers working with Rose Charities identified the problem on a trip with one of their fathers (assisting with post tsunami support) to the Rose Charities Sri Lanka projects in Kalmunai. ...

The girls saw how pivotally important it was for young people to be able to achieve higher education. A degree or diploma will lift them, their families and children (then or future) out of poverty and dependency , possibly for ever. In addition graduates have the power to influence their communities and inspire their own generation to greater achievement and education levels for a greater quality of life for all. The sad fact however is that many highly talented students, even having been offered places at university (where tuition is free), are still not able to attend, simply because they cannot afford he living costs. Such costs include, accommodation, food, books and study materials, transport etc. |

By Canadian standards the amount a student needs is minimal - around $C600 for an entire 4 year course !!!
Amanda and Charis set about working out how they could assist and came up with their UniverisiTEA program. Sri Lanka is world famous for its tea and the two girls, through local contacts, were able to elicit tea donations. Now by giving a packet of Sri Lankan tea with every C$ or greater donation to the UniversitTEA program here in Canada they are both able to promote the Sri Lankan tea industry and support poor Sri Lankan students in higher education.
Who knows where the next Einstein or Marie Curie may come from, but perhaps they will be the result of UniversiTEA !
