500 million or 12% of the worlds population suffer from disability.  The Rose Charities Rehabilitation Surgery model was developed in 1998 to meet this challenge.  It combines training with affordable, sustainable, effective treatment focused entirely on improvement in quality of life.  Its success is doubly indicated by the attempts of others to copy it...  a true complement ! <click>

Rose Charities Cambodia is a Cambodian registered organization implementing and teaching low cost, sustainable rehabilitation surgery and medicine.  It runs  ophthalmic surgical, medical and optometric services in conjunction with the Cambodian Ministry of Social Affairs, at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Center, on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.

Established  in 1998 by one of the founders of Project IRIS eye program,  and nurtured   through donations from private Canadian individuals, small scale grants from Canada, Australia and Britain and the Hong Kong based Kadoorie Foundation,  the clinic immediately filled a great need in services for the poor of Cambodia.  It was transferred to  RoseCharities Canada from IRIS in 1999  and began to exapnd rapidly to fill the great need of the poor for sight restoration.    In 2002  it was looted and gutted by thieves but was able to reestablished itself through its dedicated staff, and the help of private individuals from Canada, USA, New Zealand, Nepal and the UK.  It now runs as an entirely independent Cambodian organization as part of the Rose Charities International Network.  In recent years it has been extensively reorganized and assisted by New Zealand expertise and donation, but the main reason for its success has been the dedication and of its Cambodian staff and management.

A LIVING LEGEND......The clinic is directed by Dr Hang Vra, a legendary figure now in Cambodian medical history. Even after the clinic had been gutted by thieves, Dr Vra would come to attend the empty shell on his old motor-bike, just so the hundreds of poor Cambodians would be seen and comforted  - even though all his instruments and medications were gone. He continued this, day in day out for weeks and months until finally he was able to start building it all from the beginning again.

Surgery and training  by Cambodians, for Cambodians

Rose Charities Cambodia was registered as a fully national Cambodian organization in 2001.   With the help of sibling ROSE organizations in Canada, UK  New Zealand and USA and hard dedicated work however it is now probably Cambodia's foremost locally registered and operated medical/surgical rehabilitation NGO.

Every month, hundreds of poor Cambodians make their  own way to the clinic (the vehicles owned by the clinic were stolen in 2002).  They are  assessed and, if possible  treated by medicine and/or surgery or optometry.   Materials and medications are supplied free of charge It is not uncommon to restore sight to over 100 patients per month.
