Tsunami Children's Memorial Community Center. Kalmunai Sri Lanka.

Rose Charities in Sri Lanka

Rose Charities Canada has carried out the following projects in S.E. Sri Lanka post tsunami of  24th December 2004

With these combined projects it is estimated that to date, and thanks to the generosity of  (mostly) Canadian (but also some other donors), well over 100,000 children and family members - almost all in area severely affected by the wave - have been significantly assisted either through health care, psychological support, education and / or other social programs.

The cost has been less than  $Can 80,000.

Donations to Sri Lanka have been well over S1,000,000,000 .. so you.. generous donors have provided with one ten-thousandth of that sum, services which have made an enormous difference to the lives of so many in the worst tsunami affected area.  Thank you....

Our projects in Sri Lanka are ferociously functional.  We are hugely proud of the fact that our administration costs are close to zero (in Canada we are all volunteers).  Many of us are ex field workers. We know the wastage that goes on in the 'aid industry' .  We know the real field costs and how to get funds to where they are needed.   None of us care whether we small or big or who knows or does not know our name. (frankly it makes us rather depressed when we see large aid organizations running expensive double peak time ad slots on TV !)  All we care about is being effective.  We know that the joy of helping and giving works equally and precisely in both directions...its just the twist of fate which one is going to affect us at any given time.

So now we are collecting to build a community center for the tsunami kids and their families.  It will be around 10.000 sq. feet in size, and be a place where they can be secure, play, learn, enjoy and feel is theirs.  We know it is needed (we have been running a very small version in rented accommodation. We know the town supports it. We know how wonderful  it will. be, especially for those families still living in tin shacks (so called 'temporary accommodation') or even tents.
